Public International Law
As Individual Lawyer and counsel (2007-2014), then Head of Public International Law and Dispute Settlement at LCILP (October 2014-present):

  • Since June 2015: legal adviser to the United Nations Special Rapporteur on unilateral coercive measures (OHCHR, Geneva), Mr. Idriss Jazairy, on legal aspects of international sanctions.
  • Advising the government of a State in East Africa on a range of investment arbitration issues (including the reform of its international investment legal framework), as well as public international law issues (economic sanctions, outstanding land and maritime boundaries, law of treaties, mechanisms of settlement of inter-State disputes) (2015-present).
  • Advising the government of a State in the Middle East on public international law matters in relation to economic sanctions and international dispute settlement mechanisms (2007-present).
  • Advising a group of more than 20 financial institutions in relation to EU economic sanctions, including jurisdictional options under relevant BITs and modalities of judicial review of the measures (2013).
  • Advising the government of an Asian State on several related transboundary pollution disputes (involving harm on transboundary rivers and the atmosphere) with its neighbors (2013-present).
  • Advising the government of a European State on negotiation of the delimitation of its maritime zones with its neighbors (since 2013).
  • Advising the government of a State in Africa on the delimitation of outstanding land boundaries and the demarcation and management of settled boundaries (2013-present).
  • Advising the government of a State in Latin America on matters related to nuclear non-proliferation and IAEA safeguards (2012).

International Arbitration
As Individual Lawyer and counsel (2011-present)

  • Lead counsel to Claimant in Cem G. Uzan v Republic of Turkey, an ongoing USD 2.5 billion claim under the ECT before an arbitral tribunal constituted under the Rules of Arbitration of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce (SCC), related to the expropriation of electricity generation and distribution concessions.
  • Representing a State-owned Uzbek company in its ICC dispute against a Brazilian company arising from an international sale contract (2014-2015).
  • Advising the government of a State in Central Asia on its ongoing ICSID arbitration against a Turkish company (2014-2015).
  • Counsel to a major international football club in Iran in an arbitration against the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne (2013).

Banking and Financial Law
As Associate of the Banking and Finance practices of the law firms Allez & Associés, Paris (2008-2010), and Rochelois Besins & Associés, Paris (2011-2013)

  • Member of the legal team advising the Federal Republic of Germany in the €35bn bailout of Hypo Real Estate bank, the first high-profile rescue deal of a major financial institution in Germany in the wake of the financial crisis (2009-2011).
  • Advisor to a banking syndicate comprising Deutsche Pfandbriefbank (pbb), Helaba, Bayern LB, DekaBank and Deutsche Postbank on a €190 million loan to refinance the acquisition of a commercial property in central Paris by MGPA investment fund. The loan was closed in July 2012.
  •  Advisor to the German bank Deutsche Pfandbriefbank (pbb) on the €92 million loan to refinance the acquisition of a commercial property in the Paris area by Catalyst European Property Fund LP. The loan was closed in May 2011.
  • Advisor to a banking syndicate comprising SNS Property Finance B.V. and Deutsche Postbank on a €90 million loan to refinance the acquisition of a commercial property in Northern France by Heron International Holdings. The loan was closed in May 2008.
